The Big Bash League is a T20 league known for bringing exciting ideas to the game of cricket. In the 2018-19 season, the BBL introduced the bat flip, which determines which team bowls or bats first. From the 2019-20 season onward, the league’s final structure was changed to accommodate a fifth team. In 2023-24, the original structure was retained.

In the 2020-21 season, power surge was introduced in the league for the first time. It replaced the earlier “X-Factor Player” rule as part of Cricket Australia’s efforts to make the league more dynamic and viewer-friendly.

What Is Power Surge In BBL?
Power Surge is a special batting rule in the BBL that allows the batting team to take two extra Powerplay overs at a time of their choice. In T20s, the powerplay is six overs at the start of the innings. However, in BBL, the Powerplay is 4 overs at the start of an innings.

With Power Surge, teams can choose overs 11–20 (usually between overs 11–16) to take 2 additional Powerplay overs. During these overs, only 2 fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle, just like the main Powerplay. This rule encourages aggressive batting in the middle overs and adds tactical depth. Teams often use Power Surge when a set batter is at the crease, helping accelerate scoring without waiting for the death overs.
